Gemini 4 Argon reaches the Gemini app, with a mode that keeps working while you are away
Announced 13 October
On 13 October Google said Gemini 4 Argon, the model it first showed on 30 September, is "rolling out globally for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app". Those are Google's paid personal plans.
Google says Argon "answers questions more directly with less hedging", repeats itself less and skips clichés, and shares progress more often on longer jobs.
The same post adds "tasks": a toggle in the chat window that switches Gemini from chatting to doing, so it "can work for you even when you're not at your computer". Gemini now connects to more than 40 apps, such as Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify.
Argon also went generally available on the Gemini API, the paid route software suppliers use, on 13 October. The introductory price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until 30 November, then $4 and $20. A token is roughly three quarters of a word.
Artificial Analysis, an independent testing firm, scores Argon 53 on its Intelligence Index, eighth of 216 models, at $1.99 per test task. Google's own figures are benchmark claims, not checks on real client work.
Google's announcements name the personal Pro and Ultra plans. They do not say when Argon reaches Google Workspace business accounts.
Gemini's "skills" start rolling out, but the version your team gets first has no admin controls
Update posted 13 October
A skill is a saved set of instructions, for example "write in our house style" or "always lay out a quote this way", that Gemini reuses so you do not have to retype it. Google's own guide to the feature is titled "Teach Gemini your team's know-hows".
On 13 October Google posted that skills in the Gemini app began a "gradual rollout starting on October 13, 2026, with expected completion by mid-November". They are available to all Google Workspace customers and to personal Google accounts.
The same post is plain about control: "There are no admin controls for skills in the Gemini app."
The managed version, skills inside Workspace, which an admin can switch on or off and which is limited to users over 18 on Business Starter and above, was due to finish its first rollout by 12 October. It is now "delayed until further notice". Google says it is working "to ensure skills in Workspace launch in a safe and reliable manner".
Google also says that in the coming weeks Gemini app skills will gain sharing and a Google Drive connection, and that it will post when those start.
Clear takeaways
- Google's most capable model is now in the Gemini app for paid personal plans, and it can carry on with a job while you are away. Business Workspace accounts have no date yet.
- More direct answers are easier to read and easier to trust by mistake. The check against the source is still yours.
- Skills are worth writing now, as documents. Hold back on loading client work into them until the admin-managed Workspace version arrives.
Do this now
- Ask your team one question: is anyone using a personal Google AI Pro, ChatGPT or Claude account for client work? A yes is not a telling-off, it is the list of tools to bring under the firm's account.
- Add one line to your AI policy, or start one: "Client information only goes into AI tools on accounts the firm owns."
- Write your three most repeated instructions as plain documents: your house writing style, your quote or fee letter layout, and your file-note format. Each one is a skill waiting to happen, in any AI tool, and a training note for new staff either way.
- If you run Google Workspace, ask whoever manages it to watch the Workspace Updates blog for the new skills date, and to decide who should be allowed to use skills before the switch arrives.
- If you try Argon, test it on one piece of work you have already finished and checked, such as a file summary or a client letter, and compare its figures and dates against yours before trusting it on anything new.
